Lyndy Dean Bennett is a judge for the Eleventh Judicial District Court in New Mexico. He was appointed to the court by Republican Governor Susana Martinez on January 2, 2015.[1] He won election in the general election in November 8, 2016.

Education

Bennett received his undergraduate degree from Sonoma State University and his J.D. from the Golden Gate University School of Law.[1]

Career

From 1998 until his appointment to the Eleventh Judicial District Court in January 2015, Bennett served as a prosecutor for the Eleventh Judicial District.[1]

New Mexico held general elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. A primary election took place on June 7, 2016. The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was March 8, 2016.[2] Incumbent Lyndy Dean Bennett defeated Marcella King-Ben in the New Mexico 11th District Court general election for Division 5.[3]

The 84 judges of the New Mexico District Courts are selected in partisan elections to six-year terms. They must compete in yes-no retention elections if they wish to serve subsequent terms.[4]

The process of chief judge selection varies by district, as does the chief judge's term length.[4]

Qualifications
To serve on this court, a judge must:[4]

  • be the minimum age of 35;
  • have at least six years legal practice;
  • be a state resident for at least three years; and
  • be a district resident.
