Dennis Barger was a 2016 Republican candidate for District 14 of the Arizona House of Representatives.

Campaign themes

2016

Barger's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Education

  • The most important role of government is to educate its people. We spend the plurality of our state budget on K-12 education and that becomes a majority when you add higher education expenses. Education affects everything else! Well educated people: have better paying jobs; spend more money, increasing the state’s revenues; make better decisions about family planning; make healthier lifestyle choices; generally cost the state less in health care costs; etc.

Health Care

  • Obamacare (the Affordable Care Act) has not delivered on its promises. It needs to be overhauled. While this is a Federal Law, it has implications for state-related services through the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS). Too many people are using emergency rooms as their primary care doctors because they do not have ‘skin in the game.’ The promise of keeping one’s doctors and lowering costs has not materialized and still many Americans are not insured as promised/required.

Border Security

  • As a state legislator I would use the power of my office to pressure our elected officials in Washington to uphold their promise. I would work to ensure that state revenues go to support our four border sheriffs in their efforts to arrest and prosecute those who cross into our country illegally. Arizona clearly does not have the financial ability to secure the border, nor should it be required to do so, which leaves our only courses of action to be prosecution and working with California, New Mexico, and Texas to make noise in Washington until the Federal government meets its obligation to our citizens by providing for their defense and securing their liberty.

Gun Rights

  • The Arizona Constitution, written nearly 120 years after the US Constitution plainly states that in this state, “The right of the individual citizen to bear arms in defense of himself or the state shall not be impaired.” Short of an amendment to our constitution, which I would never propose, that language stands. Would I love to see people treat each other more civilly and with more respect? Sure I would. But when there are bad people in the world who will break laws and harm others, people must have the right to protect themselves and those they love.[1]
