David Wilson participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on June 5, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and David Wilson's responses follow below.[2]
What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
“ | 1. Non-partisan redistricting to give the power back to the voter. The current legislative majority had an opportunity to do this, but decided to play politics instead of supporting the people's vote.
2. Supporting businesses by eliminating over-regulation (the hidden tax burden). We must create a supportive environment for current businesses to grow and new business to start. 3. Using smart technology to improve traffic, reduce environmental impact, and increase quality of life.[3][4] |
” |
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?
“ | Two areas of public policy are critical requirements and priorities for me.
1. We must build accountability into every policy and law. This routine business practice establishes measurable standards and data points we should use to monitor success or failure. Our laws should clearly state what success looks like. We should have the flexibility to quickly modify failing policies.
2. The second is transparency. Every policy, every program, every activity funded with taxpayer money should be open for near-real-time review by the public. This will require accountability standards to be in place and tracked. This also means open meetings or live stream video of meetings will be the rule and not the exception.
Once this is done, we can have more effective efforts to provide affordable housing, better education, better public safety, and to solve the opioid crisis!Cite error: Invalid |

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. David Wilson answered the following:
Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow and why?
“ | I look up to my parents who, in their 80's, are the perfect examples of servant leaders. They taught me to always choose the difficult right over the easy wrong. They taught me to vote for the person and not the party. Good rules to live by![4] | ” |
“ | I believe in the innovative nature of free people! I believe in the standards and expectations as set forth by the US Constitution, which includes limiting government to do the things only the government can do and placing that limited responsibility as far down to the local level as possible. I believe the less you tax the people of a nation, the greater that nation will be and the richer the people will be. All of this and more can be found in a treasured little book, called "Politics: Easy as P.I.E." by former Congressman Bob McEwen.[4] | ” |
“ | An elected official must be completely trustworthy with absolute integrity. They must always remember they work for the voters. Elected officials must be loyal to the constitutions of their state and their nation.[4] | ” |
“ | As the son of a minister, I have compassion for all and have learned there is honor in serving others. As a senior military officer, I have the leadership ability to analyze a problem, gather the resources, and solve it. As a teacher, I understand passing these qualities on to the next generation is critical for the continued success of our state and nation.[4] | ” |
“ | To know and understand our history as a nation and as a state. To understand and abide by the rule of law. To serve others. To preserve the original intent of being a free people.[4] | ” |
“ | I had just turned six years old when the first man walked on the moon. It was an extraordinary time to be a young child.[4] | ” |
“ | I've had jobs for almost as long as I can remember. At the youngest age, I had my household chores and yard work. This included everything from washing dishes to weeding the garden. As I grew older, jobs were added, not replaced. In addition to the same chores, I now sold a Saturday newspaper and had a daily morning paper route. In the summer I cut grass, put up hay and cut firewood. At any other given time, I would be selling All Occassion Cards, vegetable and flower seeds, or similar items to make extra money for spending. Picking up pop bottles always provided some extra cash I could use to increase my savings account. My first job with a real paycheck was working at a hotel as a waiter in their banquet rooms.[4] | ” |
“ | Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. It happens during my favorite time of the year, the Fall, and we celebrate it with as many family members and friends as possible.[4] | ” |
“ | One of my favorite books is, "The Dream Giver," by Bruce Wilkinson. In very simple language, in fact as a parable, it unfolds the path each person takes to accomplishing their God-given purpose, their dream! This story helps to clearly identify those who support your dream and those who appose it. More importantly, it explains why, allowing you a better understanding their real motives. It also describes what to expect, which becomes critical information during the tough times when each of us struggle with continuing in the direction we should be going. And, finally, it reveals the exuberance of accomplishing our dream and seeing how the results will bless others.[4] | ” |
“ | My favorite thing is my library. I chose not to be an avid reader till much later than I should have. I always read to my children, and now to my Grandchildren. I've taught them books are full of knowledge, and reading is the way to get the knowledge from the books to our brains. Reading is an amazing activity where we can experience someone else's life, their dreams, their sadness, and their celebrations. My library is full of life stories, history, action, advice, and yes, even pictures![4] | ” |
“ | I believe the benefit is minimal. When our Founding Fathers created our form government, it was made to be simple enough for the average person to represent their communities.[4] | ” |
“ | Maryland's greatest challenge is balance. We are a state of mountain wilderness and city lights. Our Nation's capital is our neighbor to the south and the ocean to our east. We boast a number of businesses that remain on the cutting edge of technology, transforming the future of mankind. We are also a kind and caring people who love others and celebrate the wonderful diversity of our world right here within our state's borders. All of these things can and should work hand in hand, yet they don't alway seem to. Maryland has a great opportunity to set the standard of how to balance all these things, but we must first balance our political environment.[4] | ” |
“ | The Governor, as all good leaders, must cast a vision of the future for how our state will thrive, while mutually supporting our Nation's efforts to be remain a global leader. Legislators should be supportive, while remaining the voice of truth, without being self-serving.[4] | ” |
“ | Yes. Building relationships allows each person to see issues from a different perspective. We should all be working towards a similar goal. Sometimes the answer lies in the voice of opposition.[4] | ” |
“ | We must abide by the constitutional requirements and then require a non-partisan committee to use an algorithm to establish district boundaries, removing all party bias.[4] | ” |
“ | The Education, Health & Environmental Affairs Committee would best allow me to use my previous and current experiences.[4] | ” |
“ | Running for a different office is always a possibility. I support term limits and will limit myself to no more than three terms in the state senate. There are many ways to continue serving others. It's something I will always do.[4] | ” |
“ | The Asian American communities and associations continue to be enthusiastic supporters of Republican candidates. Early on in my campaign, I was invited to the home of a Chinese-American couple who invited many of their friends and colleagues to discuss issues. The most significant issue of the evening was education and how disappointed they were in the standards of our schools in Montgomery County. But the most impactful statement was a result of a question I asked the group. My question was simply, "Why are so many Chinese-Americans registered Republicans?" The response came quick and clear. To paraphrase, When we came to America, and listened to what many of the Democratic candidates were saying, they sounded like the government officials we left in China. Personally, I think the average Democrat and the average Republican have very similar points of view on most issues. We all want fairness, opportunity, good jobs, affordable healthcare, great education, and a cleaner environment. However, too often, those on the extreme left/right of our parties have the loudest voices and the most prominent platforms to speak from. The response from my Chinese-American friends had an impact on me. It was a reminder to fight the extremes by fighting for the quiet majorities in all parties.[4] | ” |
