Swanson told The Montana Standard that the most important issue facing Montana was jobs, and that although "Montana should enjoy a budget surplus," money should be used on public education, infrastructure, and living wages for public employees.[1]

2014
Elections for the Montana House of Representatives took place in 2014. A primary election took place on June 3, 2014, and a general election took place on November 4, 2014. The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was March 10, 2014; minor party and independent candidates had until June 2, 2014, to file. Incumbent Kathy Swanson was unopposed in the Democratic primary and was unopposed in the general election. Incumbent Kirk Wagoner (D) ran in District 75. James Davis (R) filed to run, but was removed from the ballot before the primary.[8][9]
2012
Swanson won re-election in the 2012 election for Montana House of Representatives, District 86. Swanson ran unopposed in the June 5 primary election and defeated Elena Gagliano (R) in the general election, which took place on November 6, 2012.[10][11]

2010
On November 2, 2010, Swanson won election to the Montana House of Representatives. Swanson defeated incumbent Jim Jenner in the primary by a margin of 878-653. She had no opposition in the November 2 general election.
