What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

I never wanted to be a politician. I made the decision to run because I am frustrated by the extreme partisanship and ineffectiveness we are seeing from our incumbents. I have been out speaking to my district every single day for 5 months and it turns out they are frustrated for the same reasons I am. My community expects and deserves their next senator to be effective and able to reduce crime rates, fix our budget crisis and improve our education system. With incumbent Lora Reinbold in office I do not see that happening. If elected to represent the people of Eagle River, Chugiak, JBER, and Centennial Park, my priorities will be: ensuring Alaskans are safe in their homes and communities, addressing our budget deficit while returning the PFD to the people of Alaska, and creating a high-quality and stable education system. None of this can be achieved unless we elect lawmakers willing to work together and set party politics, special interests and ego aside to do what is right for or community. I am running to represent everyone within the district and promise to be an accessible legislator for our community.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Throughout this campaign, I have spoken to thousands of residents within my district and heard their thoughts and concerns on the issues facing our district and state. I live in this community with my wife and four children. We share many of the same concerns I am hearing from residents every day. I want Alaska to be a safe and prosperous, for not only my family, but for all alaskans. The areas I am most passionate about are also my top priorities: public safety, addressing the budget and PFD grab, and creating a high-quality, stable, and responsible education system. Public Safety- We must address our crime rates in a comprehensive approach, by repealing SB91 and repairing the problems it created, addressing the opioid crisis, and putting Alaskans back to work. We have a duty to ensure that our law enforcement agencies have the tools and resources needed to enforce our laws and keep our communities safe. My opponent, Lora Reinbold failed to achieve government's top priority, keeping its citizens safe. Under incumbent Lora Reinbold's watch, SB91 (the "Soft on Crime Bill) passed and crime rates have skyrocketed. Under her last three terms in office resources for our law enforcement and prosecutors were drastically cut and Reinbold attempted to further cut law-enforcement and prosecutors while crime rates continue to rise. We need a leader who will stand up for our community and address the opioid crisis to do what is right for our state. Education- A strong education system in the backbone of any safe and prosperous society. We need to invest in our youth if we hope for Alaska's economy to meet global changes and have a vibrant society. By creating a stable, reliable, and sufficient budget for our school system we can save significant amounts of public dollars and improve education for our students. We must ensure our teachers can count on stable funding and benefits to reduce turnover rates which in turn cost our state even more to hire and retrain educators while also impacting the quality of our schools. No more pink slips! Budget, Economy and PFD- Almost all of our state's problems are tied to our budget and a mismanagement of state dollars. During my last 7 years in the Marines, I served in Acquisition and Logistics management where I planned and executed budgets for Marine Corps radar and artillery systems deployed worldwide. The number one principle I learned is that short-term and shifting budgets inherently lead to wasteful spending. I hope to bring stability and forward planning to our government and believe that is the key to reducing our budget deficit. Through a stable budget, along with a reliable tax and regulatory system we can incentivize new industry and business to invest in our state while encouraging entrepreneurship and small business growth. On top of addressing our budget deficit, I will work tirelessly to enshrine the PFD into the Alaska State Constitution to keep it out of the hands of politicians. The PFD provides a great boost to our economy, creates jobs, and lifts thousands of Alaskans out of government programs.

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

I look up greatly to Secretary of Defense General Mattis who is one of the most skilled military minds in history.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Honor, Integrity and Loyalty to the people. We need accessibility from our lawmakers. My opponent, incumbent Lora Reinbold has refused to return calls and emails from constituents, or hold open hours, and has even blocked constituents from her Representative FaceBook page. This is unacceptable. We deserve better from our next state Senator.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

These are qualities I hold dear and where honed during my time in the U.S. Marine Corps and that I will carry on to our Legislature: Judgement, Justice, Dependability, Initiative, Decisiveness, Tact, Integrity, Enthusiasm, Bearing, Unselfishness, Courage, Endurance, Knowledge, and Loyalty.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

To represent the people they serve. Too many lawmakers are beholden to a political party, special interest group or let ego and selfishness dictate their decisions as an elected official. I am here to serve. I am not running for myself but for our community. I am here to represent every single person within our district, regardless of whether or not they vote for or agree with me on a certain topic. At the end of the day, I am going to listen to our community and fight for their interests. That's what a senator is elected to do.

What is your favorite book? Why?

I have more than one favority book. Among my favorites are : Fahrenheit 451, The Hobbit, Slaughterhouse 5, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Neverwhere,The Stand, Catch 22, The Passion of Command, and many many others. I could talk books all day.

What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?

My wife and children. I have two boys, Liam and Peter, as well as two girls, Sophia and Tininna. My family is the most important thing in the world to me and they are one of the main reasons I am running. I want Alaska to be safe and prosperous for not only my family, but for all Alaskans. I also have a Golden Retriever named Sam who is a rescue and loves to come knocking on the campaign trail!

What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?

Addressing our growing budget deficit. This can only be achieved through lawmakers willing to work across party lines to move our state forward. My opponent has been inneffective, even within her own party, and has had the impact of thwarting numerous budget cuts many of which were from her own party. I intend to work with each and every other legislator, regardless of party, to address the issues facing our state.

Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.

If we are going to move our state forward and address the pressing obstacles facing our state it is necessary for our legislators to have both personal and professional relationships with each other, especially across party lines. I intend to grab a cup of coffee with every other senator before the session and begin to develop that personal and professional relationship.

What process do you favor for redistricting?

A fair and unbiased process which ensures every Alaskan has the right envisioned by our Founders, "One person, One Vote."
