Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

A native of Auburn, IN, over the last decade I've worked at inner city Boys & Girls Clubs, two Indiana churches, the Indiana Senate, a neighborhood service nonprofit and a public library. I've done that work because I believe public service means investing in the quality of peoples lives and making tangible change in communities. I was blessed to earn a B.A. from Miami University in 2010, and a Master of Divinity degree from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary in 2018 where I focused on Christian theology, understanding and healing issues of systemic oppression and the invaluable worth of each human being. That faith journey was part of a 35 year membership in the Presbyterian Church (USA). I am the recipient of incredible blessings, from a brilliant, hard working and loving family, from inspiring friends, from dedicated teachers and wise mentors. Their examples have further instilled in me a passion for ensuring each individual knows their inherent worth, each child is nurtured, cared for and empowered, and each person feels they have opportunity and value in our society. To me, that means working to make sure our promises of liberty, justice and democracy are real for all.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

I'm particularly passionate about ensuring we stand by our commitments and live up to our ideals. That means supporting education. It means ensuring teachers feel empowered, respected for their expertise and honored for their position in our communities. It also means when we make decisions about education we're well informed, leading with open minds, knowledge and facts instead of preconceived notions and attitudes.

That leads into the second area-- the character of our politics. Too often we have prioritized political points and power over the good of our citizens. Responsible democracy means listening to the wisdom, insights and expertise of the people in our communities, authentic representation which serves all people not just a handful of like-minded interests, and investing the the quality of our neighbors' lives.

Finally, mental healthcare is a major need in our district. The Kaiser Family Foundation recently reported that rural areas like large parts of our district have a third of the needed mental healthcare providers. In 2020, the number of area youth at high risk of suicide jumped 873%. Drug addiction continues to be a major challenge in our communities. There are few better opportunities for strengthening our communities, helping our people access freedom and opportunity, protecting those working in emergency services and actually healing addiction than expanding mental healthcare in our state.
