School board candidates in Michigan were required to file pre-election campaign finance reports with their county election offices by October 28, 2016. Post-election reports were due by December 8, 2016.[5]

In Michigan, candidates are prohibited from receiving contributions from corporations or labor organizations. Within 10 days of becoming a candidate, candidates must form a candidate committee. Following the creation of the committee, candidates have an additional 10 days to register the committee with the school district filing official by filing a statement of organization. A candidate committee that does not expect to receive or spend more than $1,000 during the election cycle is eligible to receive a reporting waiver, which allows that committee not to file pre-election, post-election, and annual campaign statements.[6]

I am a senior software developer for Beaumont Health, a husband, father of two boys, a proud active member of the Dearborn community. I have a bachelor's in Computer Engineering/Science from UM-Dearborn and an MBA from Wayne State University. I have been active in my community in many positive ways. I co-founded a non-profit dedicated to promoting higher education in underprivileged communities, lead my neighborhood association, and taught for 3 years. In the last year, I have advocated for more support to our district and Henry Ford College from our legislators. I continue to be vocal about the importance of social and emotional learning; leading the passing of the anti-bullying resolution by our board and recognizing the month of October as National Bullying Prevention Month. I am running to retain your trust because I love and care about our schools and college.
  • I wholeheartedly believe that quality education is the foundation of the great good and the special gift we can give to our children.
  • I will always advocate for an equitable allocation of resources for each student in our amazing district to succeed.
  • My campaign is about quality education for our students; strong schools with happy educators. Fiscal responsibility to me isn't just a slogan; It's a major trust I hold dear to the taxpayers of Dearborn Schools district. I recognize and appreciate our heroes (our teachers, professors, and supporting staff) in their exceptional roles.
I am very passionate about equity in education, social-emotional learning, and fiscal responsibility. As board members, we have to influence our legislators in State Capital to adequately fund public education. The state's school-aid fund should not be hijacked by other spending items but rather protected and increased to offset the decline in education funding. I continue to be vocal about the importance of social and emotional learning; leading the passing of the anti-bullying resolution by our board and recognizing the month of October as National Bullying Prevention Month. Since my appointment in April 2019, I challenge the administration as well as my colleagues to do more for our students, teachers, and staff. Our taxpayers deserve a good return on their investment: a successful fiscally responsible and innovative district.
My role models are Martin Luther King Jr, Malcom X, and Randy Pausch. I look up to the civil rights icons for their wisdom to aspire for a just and fair society. I look up to Mr. Pausch for his principles in living up to childhood dreams and living a simple life.
I believe my listening skills and passion for educational equity and justice make me a successful officeholder. I enjoy listening to my constituents and elevating their voices at the board table.
As a hardcore soccer fan, I remember watching the FIFA World Cup 1998 as a teenager.
I was a greeter at Lashish in 2004. I worked right after my high school graduation for 4 months.
Last Lecture by Randy Pausch for his simple philosophy of living life.
The primary job of a school board member is to be responsive to the district's immediate needs and be easily accessible by the public. A board member needs to work with 6 others to ensure quality education for our students and a nourishing environment for learners, teachers, staff, and parents.
All residents of the school district are my constituents. Whether you have a child at the district, you still have a stake at our public district and Henry Ford College.
To be easily accessible by all of them. and articulating their rightful demands. Whether it's in listening sessions, accessible via social media, or returning emails/correspondence.
I bring to the board relationships built over the years through activism, knowledge, and leadership. This activism started back in high school, being a student leader as well as college, and after college, finding
a chapter for a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting higher education. I am very active in many civic organizations in Dearborn such as PTA, League of Women Voters, my neighborhood association, and Rotary Club of Dearborn. I believe I already bring many organizations and stakeholders to the table. I will continue to involve our unions, different segments of society such as seniors to be more involved in our schools.
I believe parents' engagement is key to students' success. I am a current fellow for the Buildup non-profit working on a parent engagement strategy utilizing technology. I will continue to push for more outreach programs to engage parents in our schools. I am also proud to attend all parent-teacher conferences in our 3 high schools, my son's elementary, and my nephews' middle school.
Successful districts are those who adequately reflect the student body. We as a district need to offer mentoring programs for our staff to become leaders and actively recruit diversified staff.
Funding - I address it by aggressive advocacy for more dollars to the student aid fund by our legislators as well as seeking private sector funds to support our foundation.

Overcrowding and classroom size - Research has shown over and over again that classroom size is key to successful districts. I will always advocate for newer facilities in our district to alleviate the crowdedness.

Overtesting - I have and will always advocate for less testing and more focus on instruction time

Candidate Connection

Adel Mozip completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Mozip's responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

The top challenges we have in the K-12 system is student safety, quality education and the effectiveness of programs. I would like to see programs evaluated by the board and be funded based on their effectiveness. I would also ask to track key progress indicators for these programs. My top priority for Henry Ford College is retaining students and full-time professors. Enrollment has decreased for Henry Ford College and the number of full-time professors is below what is expected for quality instruction. I will ask the new College President to draft new ways of improving the academic experience on campus and to work with stakeholders on a long-term strategic plan. For HFC to stay affordable, I will be advocating for funding at the state level given my policy experience.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

I'm very passionate about equitable access to education opportunities. Being a first-generation college student, I understand the challenges that students and I'd like to address access to college opportunities at the board level. I'd like the administration to have a clear plan for every student graduating; whether they're going to college or trades.

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

I look up to President John F Kennedy for inspiration and guidance in my public service life. He has inspired us to be idealistic, pragmatic, and selfless public servants.

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

I would recommend a book written by late Carnegie Mellon Professor Randy Pausch titled "The Last Lecture"

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

I believe the most important principals of an elected official must have are honesty, independence, and inclusiveness to all. Elected officials must listen to the concerns, aspirations, and ideas of their constituents. They should always treat them with respect, humility, and integrity.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

I believe my experiences and expertise will be an asset to the Board as a father, software entrepreneur and an active citizen who loves Dearborn schools and Henry Ford College. I was raised to value the importance of education since my parents were not able to go to school. I am running to strengthen our schools and empower our students. As a leader of technology, leadership and community service youth programs I have guided youth in effectively achieving their goals in education to become successful. As co-founder of a non-profit organization that promotes higher education. I am a contributor to the PTA,League of Women Voters, AAYSP, Eastborn Neighborhood Association and Rotary. I have an MBA from Wayne State University and extensive statewide policy experience.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

The role of the board is to ensure that school districts are responsive to the values, beliefs and priorities of their communities. School board members offer support for public schools, ensure accountability and transparency, and allocate funds for programs that are beneficial to our children. It's also important to have a board that represents its community, and that no student voices are missing from the decision making process. It's the board's responsibility to support the administration and hold them accountable.

What legacy would you like to leave?

I'd like to leave a legacy of a public servant who is loved by his constituents because of my responsiveness to their needs and aspirations.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

It was being the Class President in 2nd grade. It was a tough competition given the many outstanding students vying for the spot.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

My first job was greeting patrons at LaShish Restaurant in Canton. I was there for the summer of 2004, right after graduation from High School. In the fall, I accepted a part-time job at the Mardigian Library - University of Michigan-Dearborn Circulation Desk which I enjoyed very much.

What is your favorite holiday? Why?

Thanksgiving. It's a great way to celebrate unity and be thankful for the things we have.

What is the primary job of a school board member in your view?

Ensure that school districts are responsive to the values, beliefs and priorities of their communities.

Who are your constituents?

Dearborn and Dearborn Heights (Precinct 1-4) residents.

Adel Mozip participated in Ballotpedia's 2016 survey of school board candidates. In response to the question "What do you hope to achieve if elected to the school board?" the candidate stated on September 6, 2016:

My main goals for Dearborn Schools and Henry Ford College are to increase student academic achievement across the board (P-12 and College), improve college readiness for high school students, bridge the gap between the under-performing and over-achieving students, utilize technology to be more pro-active with parents and the community, enhance teacher/staff compensation benefits. At the same time, I am hoping the the district can be fiscally responsible by making sure every dollar is well spent[9][10]
Ranking the issues

The candidate was asked to rank the following issues based on how they should be prioritized by the school board, with 1 being the most important and 7 being the least important. Each ranking could only be used once.

We can achieve these goals while being fiscally responsible through effective and efficient implementation of programs.[10]

Positions on the issues

The candidate was asked to answer nine questions from Ballotpedia regarding significant issues in education and the school district. The questions are highlighted in blue and followed by the candidate's responses. Some questions provided multiple choices, which are noted after those questions. The candidate was also provided space to elaborate on their answers to the multiple choice questions.

Should new charter schools be approved in your district? (Not all school boards are empowered to approve charter schools.
In those cases, the candidate was directed to answer the question as if the school board were able to do so.)
No. We already have too many charter schools operating around the district. Charter schools do not provide the full rounded education package to our children. Some if not most charter schools have their bottom line revenue as their number one goal. School institutions should have student success as their number one.
Which statement best describes the ideal relationship between the state government and the school board? The state should always defer to school board decisions, defer to school board decisions in most cases, be involved in the district routinely or only intervene in severe cases of misconduct or mismanagement.
The state should defer to school board decisions in most cases.
Are standardized tests an accurate metric of student achievement?
No. While standardized tests can give teachers, administrations, and public a good snapshot of how students are performing, it shouldn't be the single metric to accurately measure student achievement. Student achievement should take into account: poverty level, language barriers, and psychological/social factors.
What is your stance on the Common Core State Standards Initiative?
While the standards put together by the Common Core were great, the implementation of the CC was not be best.Since some states have adopted the initiative and others like Michigan are now repealing the measure, it's very difficult to say whether the Common Core is going to stand in Michigan. State Legislature must look into best practices and success stories to make their decision.
How should the district handle underperforming teachers? Terminate their contract before any damage is done to students, offer additional training options, put them on a probationary period while they seek to improve or set up a mentorship program for the underperforming teacher with a more experienced teacher in the district?
Offer additional training options. Set up a mentorship program for the underperforming teacher with a more experienced teacher in the district. It is very important that we setup a mentoring program for all the teachers interested and give extra help to the underperforming teachers. Trainings should be offered as well. If all avenues of improvement are exhausted, the district needs to work with the union to replace the teacher.
Should teachers receive merit pay?
Yes. Teachers are underappreciated in our society (national level). Teachers should be paid very well so we can continue to attract the bright minds to teach.
Should the state give money to private schools through a voucher system or scholarship program?
No. Private schools should not be given any type of assistance (except for safety grants).
How should expulsion be used in the district?
An expulsion should only be used in extreme cases whereas a student has continuously disrupted the education process in his/her school. Parents should be involved prior to making a call to expel a student out of a district.
What's the most important factor for success in the classroom: student-teacher ratio, the curriculum, teachers, parent involvement or school administration?
Teachers. While student-teacher ratio, curriculum, parents, and administrators can serve as vital support to the classroom, the teacher in my view is the most important factor for success!

Additional themes

Mozip provided the following responses for the voter guide compiled by MLive.com:

Why are you running for office?
Raised by a hard working family who valued education for their children since they didn't have the opportunity to attend college, I have been very passionate about pursuit of quality education as much as people are in pursuit of happiness. I am running to be the 7th school board member of the Dearborn Public Schools and a trustee on the Henry Ford College to make sure that children in the Dearborn School District and students at Henry Ford College receive top quality education. I have been blessed to have a great family, a great career, and I feel it's time for me to continue giving back to the community in a higher level. I am a very passionate, committed, dedicated individual who has a decade of business experience, activism, and involvement in the district. I'm running to represent all residents of Dearborn including those who do not have family members attending the public schools or the College. I'm running to listen to their concerns and quickly work to address and resolve them.

What are your top three priorities?
My top three priorities as a school board member are: increasing student achievement while closing the achievement gap, enhancing teachers/staff compensation benefits, and improving college readiness for high school students. We can bridge the academic achievement gap between the under-performing and over-achieving students by implementing effective programs for the students to thrive in school such as mentoring to at-risk students and individualized goals tracking for each student. The district should expand its focus on the teachers and staff because they make a huge impact on student success by incentivising those who teach and work in Dearborn Schools and the Henry Ford College. College readiness can be achieved by making sure students are introduced to higher education opportunities in their early education (even elementary and middle) while periodically meeting with them and their families to make sure they're en route to succeeding in college or vocational schools.

What is the most pressing issue for this office?
The most pressing issue in this office is student success. If the district fails to provide the means for students to be successful, then it has failed to fulfill its promise and mission statement. Student high achievement is the main goal that the district should be working toward while aligning other goals to support that main goal. There are many other pressing issues that come before the Board of Education (in both P-12 and College), and the board must be prepared to tackle them making sure that our students receive top quality education.[11][10]
