Andrea Raila (Democratic Party) ran for election for Cook County Assessor in Illinois. She lost in the Democratic primary on March 20, 2018.

In February 2018, Raila was disqualified from the election after a trial judge ruled that her campaign improperly collected signatures on her nominating petitions. On March 14, 2018, the First District Court of Appeals declared that Raila should be reinstated and votes cast for her be counted because they found the county hearing officer had not allowed an important witness to testify.[1][2]

Noteworthy events

Raila reinstated as candidate

On February 5, 2018, a judge ruled that Raila should be removed from the ballot because of alleged fraud in her nominating petitions.[4] Raila challenged the decision, but on February 15, 2018, the Cook County Electoral Board ruled that she should not appear on the ballot.[5] Because Raila appealed that ruling on February 21, 2018, the same day the Cook County Clerk finalized election day ballots, elections official chose to keep her name on the ballot in case the ruling was overturned. A Cook County judge upheld the decision to disqualify Raila on February 27, 2018, but her name still appeared on the ballot. Voters were given notices at their polling places that a vote for Railia would not count.[1][6]

On March 14, 2018, the First District Court of Appeals reversed the decision because they found the county hearing officer had not allowed a petition circulator to testify. The appellate court ruled that votes for Raila would be counted and that polling place notices regarding her being disqualified should be taken down.[2]
