Campaign themes

2017

Brinson's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Police Accountability

  1. We must establish an Independent Citizens Review Board with subpoena and investigative powers to prohibit the police from policing themselves.
  2. We believe that District 2 needs leadership that will fight relentlessly for transparency concerning police misconduct instead of leadership that aligns it self with the collusion of police abuse and corruption.

Addressing Racial and Systemic Inequity to Achieve Economic Justice

  1. We will champion policy that seeks to raise minimum wage to $15/hour for all City Employees, including those hired through temp services and by companies receiving city contracts.
  2. We will demand equitable distribution of city contracts to the black Business Community, instead of the dismal allocation of 98% percent of monetary resources going to their white counterparts.
  3. We will uplift re-development that emphasizes community ownership of enterprise and property modeling the Renaissance Community Coop.

Our understanding is that economic justice is a means to solving these problems, and reduces crime instead of over-policing and criminalizing poor communities.

The Right to Safe and Affordable Housing

  1. We must move to enforce housing codes and promote sustainable, affordable building renovations that will guarantee housing for low-income families without gentrification.
  2. Promote economic policy that utilizes grants and long-term, low interest home improvement loans to encourage home ownership for low- and moderate-income residents.
  3. Invest in clean energy, clean water, and affordable internet to improve quality of life and stimulate economic growth in District 2.

Participatory Budgeting

  1. Continuing in the tradition of one of the most Democratic processes in the nation and this city, the movement platform fully supports all participatory budgeting efforts surrounding the current city budget.
  2. Currently, the city has allotted 500,000 thousand dollars to be equally dispersed among the districts; however, we want to raise this amount to the national average of $1,000,000 per 100,000 residents, or $2.5 million.
  3. We will push for expansion of the process to include the ability to consider using funds for programmatic use as opposed to just funding capital projects within the district.

Sanctuary for All

  1. We want an end to police violence, surveillance of Muslims, ICE raids, and policies that harm women and LGBTQ people.
  2. We call for policies that promote real community safety by divesting from criminalization and mass incarceration and investing in jobs, housing, healthcare, education, and community-based justice solutions outside of the police & prison system.

We will work to support District 2 in maintaining a safe environment for those who reside here.

  1. Environmental degradation impacts the folks who live in District 2 immensely.
  2. Caring about the environment is not just about reducing combined carbon emissions and promoting solar panels.
  3. Communities which consist mainly of people of color experience the impact of air, water and soil pollution at much higher rates than predominantly white areas. We will focus on environmental justice.[5]
