I am not a career politician; however, I have been elected president of two local organizations: Area 11 DECA, Mead Extracurricular Coaches Association.
Other Professional Experience: Business and Marketing Teacher 38 years - Mead School District. Mt. Spokane High School 1997 - present. DECA advisor 1997 - present. Head Baseball 1997 - 2003. Head Volleyball coach 2011 - 2019.
Education: B.A. EWU Business Education M.A. Gonzaga University
Community Services: 2nd Harvest food bank - Tackle Hunger, Shriners Hospital, Youth for Christ, Union Gospel Mission, Gideons International, and DECA (which is a student business/marketing organization). In addition, I have facilitated the importance of community service with 1000's of students.
- To help our region recover from the Pandemic and to get back on track economically, emotionally, and educationally.
- Educational opportunities matter. It looks different for everyone. Not all students need or want a 4-year degree, but those who do need to be prepared to be successful.
- All Businesses need less regulation to succeed in these tough times.
This is what I will bring to our district. As a lifelong Spokane resident, I know the challenges our diverse district faces. I have spent my career educating young adults and know the hurdles they will face as they look ahead to their future. Working with local businesses I have seen the challenges ahead to recover from our current situation. If elected, I will try to help limit regulations on businesses, provide more local authority in education, and expand opportunities for the young adults in our community.
One thing that must happen in todays society is you need to be honest in what you say and do. Covering up a mistake will only make it worse. I will always be polite, but honest.
If someone wants to talk to me I will be accessible. If I am honored enough to be elected, I must remember who I am representing.
I am nothing unless I am doing the what I believe even when no one is watching. That is what integrity means to me, having the same values and acting the same in public or in a private setting.
Being a Business & Marketing teacher for 35+ years, I have witnessed how the legislator can help or damage education. The Washington Supreme court has mandated that all K-12 education be funded, and with the loss of the revenues from this shutdown education might be hit hard in the near future. This does not even speak to the financial problem our Universities, or Colleges will face, since they are not required to be funded by the state. I also see is mandatory testing as a draw back. When teachers are forced to teach to a test, it hurts the whole educational process. It also takes a tremendous amount of educational time away from the classroom teachers. Yes district/teachers should be held to standards, but testing to test is not the way to do it.
With my financial background I would be interested in being on either the Appropriations and Capital Budget committees.
Other committees I would be an asset to would be:
1) Local Government
2) Rural Development, Agriculture, and Natural Resources
