Lane has worked as the assistant executive director of Streets Ministries, a group that aims to "serve impoverished youth in the Memphis metropolitan area by unconditionally representing the Good News of Jesus Christ in word and deed."[1] Lane's own past as a former gang member has influenced his involvement in the community; in 2012, Mayor A. C. Wharton announced that Lane would lead a five-person contracted violence intervention team as part of the city's Urban Youth Initiative.[2]

According to a local news piece in The Commercial Appeal, Lane had been an honor student who excelled in boxing, track, basketball and football. Though his performance on the football team earned him a scholarship to the University of Wyoming, an unstable and impoverished family life led him down a path of drug dealing and gang involvement. His scholarship was nullified after Lane was charged with aggravated assault, having pulled a gun on a group of young men who had cornered him. He struggled to extract himself from gang involvement and ultimately, after seeking guidance from Pastor Ronnie Tullos of the Inner-city Outreach Center, set out on a healthier path at the age of 21.[2]

Of his past, Lane commented, "We knew how serious the situation was. It blew me away and affirmed how soulful God is."[2]

Lane has worked as an assistant football coach at his alma mater, Booker T. Washington High School.[2] According to The Commercial Appeal,

[Lane] lets the players, some of whom are gang members, listen on the speaker phone to calls his brother makes from prison. '[My brother] tells them to be humble and respect each other and to put down guns,' Lane said. Many of the teens seem to listen. 'I don't think there's a point of no return with any kid,' Lane says.[3]
