Three of the seven seats on the Edgewood Independent School District school board were up for general election on November 8, 2016. No incumbents filed for re-election in 2016. Edward Romero defeated Luis Gomez for the Position 7 seat. Position 4 candidate Martha Castilla and Position 5 candidate Joe Guerra won election without opposition.[1] The members cannot take office until at least 2018 due to the state's takeover of the school board in March 2016. In 2018, the Texas Commissioner of Education will have the option of renewing terms for the state-appointed board of managers or seat elected members.[2]

The Edgewood Independent School District Board of Trustees consists of seven at-large members elected to four-year terms. The filing period for Texas school board candidates running in fall elections started on July 23, 2016. The final day for candidates to file their applications for ballot placement was August 22, 2016. A candidate for school board in Texas must be a citizen of the United States and a resident of the school district. The application for ballot placement also states that candidates cannot have felony convictions or court judgments verifying total mental incapacity on their records.[3]
The deadline to register to vote for the November election was October 11, 2016. The early voting period started on October 24, 2016, and concluded on November 4, 2016.[4]

Edgewood Independent School District is located in Bexar County, Texas. The county seat is San Antonio. Bexar County was home to 1,897,753 residents in 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau.[7] The district was the 94th-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 12,063 students.[8]
Demographics
Bexar County underperformed in comparison to the state of Texas in terms of higher education achievement from 2010 to 2014. The United States Census Bureau found that 26.5 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 27.1 percent for Texas as a whole. The median household income was $50,867, compared to $52,576 for the state of Texas. The poverty rate in Bexar County was 18.3 percent, compared to 15.9 percent for the entire state.[7]
