Emilio Chávez is a judge of the Eighth Judicial District Court in New Mexico. He was appointed by Republican Governor Susana Martinez on July 14, 2015, effective August 3.[1] He ran unopposed for election in 2016.

New Mexico held general elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. A primary election took place on June 7, 2016. The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was March 8, 2016.[2] Incumbent Emilio Chávez ran unopposed in the New Mexico 8th District Court general election for Division 1.[3]

The 84 judges of the New Mexico District Courts are selected in partisan elections to six-year terms. They must compete in yes-no retention elections if they wish to serve subsequent terms.[4]

The process of chief judge selection varies by district, as does the chief judge's term length.[4]

Qualifications
To serve on this court, a judge must:[4]

  • be the minimum age of 35;
  • have at least six years legal practice;
  • be a state resident for at least three years; and
  • be a district resident.
