Two of the seven seats on the Fayetteville Public Schools school board were up for general election on September 20, 2016. Megan Hurley defeated Maria Baez de Hicks in the race for at-large Position 1. In the by-district race for Zone 1, Nika Waitsman defeated Farla Steele-Treat to win the open seat.[1]

The Fayetteville school board consists of seven members elected to staggered, five-year terms. Two board members are elected at large and five are elected by district. One at-large seat and the seat in Zone 1 were up for general election on September 20, 2016. There was no primary election.[2]

Individuals interested in running for the school board had to be at least 18 years of age and registered to vote. Candidates were required to gather petition signatures from at least 20 voters registered in the school district. This petition of candidacy had to be submitted to the Arkansas Secretary of State by June 12, 2016. School board candidates also had to reside in the school district and could not be convicted of a felony.[3]

The Fayetteville Public Schools school district is located in northwest Arkansas in Washington County. The county seat is ‎Fayetteville. Washington County was home to 225,477 residents between 2010 and 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau.[7] The district was the ninth-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 9,421 students.[8]

Demographics

Washington County outperformed Arkansas as a whole in terms of higher education achievement from 2010 to 2015. The United States Census Bureau found that 29.3 percent of county residents aged 25 years or older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 20.6 percent statewide. The median household income for Washington County was $41,983, compared to $41,264 for all of Arkansas. The poverty rate was 19.3 percent, compared to the statewide rate of 18.9 percent.[7]
