Three of the nine seats on the Freehold Regional High School District Board of Education were up for by-district general election on November 8, 2016. All three incumbents—Elizabeth Canario (Englishtown Township), Amy Fankhauser (Howell Township), and Kathie Lavin (Farmingdale Borough)—ran unopposed and won re-election to their seats.[1]

Voter and candidate information
The Freehold Board of Education consists of nine members elected to three-year terms by district. Elections are staggered with three seats up for election each year. The general election was held on November 8, 2016. There was no primary election.[2]
Candidates for the board of education must be 18 years old and registered to vote. They must have resided within the district for at least one year prior to their election or appointment. Candidates cannot concurrently hold office as mayor or as a member of the governing body of a municipality within the district. Board members cannot have been convicted of a felony. There are no term limits.[2]

About the district
Freehold Regional High School District is located in central New Jersey in Monmouth County. The county seat is Freehold Borough. The district serves K-12 students in several communities including Colts Neck, Farmingdale and Howell. Monmouth County was home to 628,715 in 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau.[6] The district was the 12th-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 11,420 students.[7]
Demographics
Monmouth County outperformed New Jersey as a whole in terms of higher education achievement from 2010 to 2014. The United States Census Bureau found that 42.0 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 36.4 percent of all state residents. The median household income for Monmouth County was $85,605, compared to the statewide average of $72,062. The poverty rate for the county was 8.2 percent, while it was 10.8 percent for the state as a whole.[6]
