Geoffrey Gratwick completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Gratwick's responses.
What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
1.) Health care reform - lower costs and improve access for all 2.) job growth in Maine - promoting small business growth and training for jobs of the future 3.) local property tax relief
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
Health care reform. I have been a physician for 40 years. Our system is overly complex, excludes many who need care, too expensive and too often directed towards profit and not medical care. We need to return to a system where the needs of patients are our number one priority
Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?
Dr Gerald Thompsen
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?
Zen in the Art of Archery - Heregel
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Elected officials should listen more than they talk, focus about long term goals, and be guided by the highest ethical standards.
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I am a good listener and long term planner
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
The ability to work across the aisle and arrive at a consensus on difficult topics.
What legacy would you like to leave?
A standing committee in the Maine Legislature that will be the clearing house for all legislation and ideas that have to do with improving the way we deliver health care - cost, access, pharmaceuticals, hospitals, providers, quality, and prevention.
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
The Korean War - 7
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
mowing lawns - three summers - starting at age 8
What happened on your most awkward date?
I shaved for the first time on my first date and cut up my face so badly that I needed multiple bandages.... totally mortifying... (:
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Thanksgiving - because it is low key
If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?
Myles Falworth
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
I am no stranger to adversity and have had many personal struggles.
Every state besides Nebraska has two legislative chambers. What do you consider the most important differences between the legislative chambers in your state?
The Senate is more collegial and less polarized than the House
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
Yes
What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?
Controlling health care costs will both help current businesses and attract new ones. It will make Maine businesses more competitive. Decreasing the cost of health care will put more money in citizen's pockets and keep them healthier.
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?
Thoughtful cooperation.
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
absolutely.
What process do you favor for redistricting?
Maine's process worked well in 2012.
If you are a current legislator, what appealed to you about your current committees?
I am committed to meaningful health care reform and am in the process of working with leadership to create a standing committee dedicated to this task. It is a major undertaking and will change the way the legislature deals with health care policy. We will have unified as opposed to the current fragmented system. I have been on the Environmental and Natural Resources committee as well as the Government Oversight Committee - as well as a number of task forces.
If you are not currently a member of your party’s leadership in the legislature, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?
No
Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?
No
Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
I met a middle aged woman the other day at her door. Her husband had died in an accident when young and left her with three children. She had gone back to school on her own, started a small business, and now has seven employees. Her house was chaotic but magnificent and she had wonderful energy.

Scorecards
A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.
Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
