Campaign themes

2014

Porter's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[1]

Education

  • Excerpt: "Prepare children for school. Invest in public pre-school."
  • Excerpt: "Prepare teachers for school. Invest in training teachers. Provide training to prepare teachers to handle disruptive and difficult students."
  • Excerpt: "Don't accept a race to the middle. While we make the investment and difficult decisions that improve underperforming schools, we owe it to ourselves to also push schools to challenge the best students to do better. Expect our best to compete with the nation's best."

Criminal Justice

  • Excerpt: "Improve schools. If only 20% of high school graduates are prepared for college or jobs, the number who turn to crime isn't surprising."
  • Excerpt: "Invest in police and the courts. People contemplating crime must believe they will be caught and when caught will be prosecuted in a timely manner."
  • Excerpt: "Support addiction treatment as an alternative to prison for non-violent offenders."
  • Excerpt: "Find the appropriate balance between the constitutionally protected right to keep and bear arms for protection, hunting, and recreation and the need to keep guns out of the hands of those who would use them for illegal purposes."

Economic Prosperity

  • Excerpt: "Develop partnerships between public and private sectors to bring new industry to Delaware. The governor outlined a number of plans to bring high tech industry to Delaware. The General Assembly should look carefully at those investment opportunities and recognize the long term gains for short term spending."

Environment

  • Excerpt: "Ensure agencies establish and enforce regulations that protect the environment without driving away business. Working as an engineer and an attorney in the nuclear industry I've seen regulations vital to improving safety and I've seen regulations that imposed significant burdens with very little benefit. I've also learned the difficulties that result when legislators write poorly crafted laws and leave it to regulatory agencies to fix."
