Jonathan Courtney
Jonathan "Jon" Courtney is a former Republican member of the Maine State Senate, representing District 3 from 2008 to 2012, serving as the Majority Leader from 2010 to 2012. Courtney was a 2012 Republican candidate who sought election to the U.S. House to represent the 1st Congressional District of Maine. Courtney served one term in the Maine House of Representatives from 2002 to 2004.
Courtney narrowly defeated challenger Patrick Calder in the Republican primary on June 12, 2012.[1]
Courtney lost to Democratic incumbent Chellie Pingree on November 6, 2012.[2]

Courtney is the owner of a cleaning business in addition to being a State senator.

Issues
The following are issues highlighted by Courtney in a September 28, 2012 interview with SeaCoast Online.[3]
- Healthcare: Courtney has stated that he is "intrigued" by a public healthcare option and that certain aspects of the Affordable Care Act are "certainly has pieces that are worth preserving." However, he does not support an individual mandate.[4]
- Taxes: Courtney supports "tak[ing] a hard look at companies that avoid taxes in the U.S. by moving overseas. They make all their money overseas and then come back and buy elections."[5]
- Social issues: Self-described as pro-life, not in favor of gay marriage.[6]

Courtney represents Maine Senate District 3. District 3 includes a portion of York County[8].

Courtney did not run for re-election to the Maine State Senate in 2012. Instead, he ran in the 2012 election for the U.S. House to represent Maine's 1st District. Courtney won the nomination on the Republican ticket. Incumbent Chellie Pingree ran unopposed in the Democratic primary. Courtney defeated Patrick Calder in the Republican primary.[9] The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run was March 15, 2012. The primary elections were held on June 12, 2012.

Chellie Pingree is an incumbent in 1st Congressional District of Maine. The challenger, Courtney, was a Republican member of the Maine State Senate. He also was a member of the Maine House of Representatives from 2002 to 2004.[11]

Courtney won re-election to the 3rd District seat in 2010. He had no primary opposition. Robert Stackpole ran for the seat on the Democratic ticket. The general election took place on November 2, 2010.[13]
