Campaign themes

2016

Meredith's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

  • Education: As a product of Oklahoma’s public schools, Kelly knows the need for a strong education system in our state, including the ability to attract and retain quality teachers. Her oldest son will begin public school in the Fall and she wants her children to enjoy the same high caliber education she received. Kelly believes we can’t continue to cut education funding and move our state forward. She wants to stop the irresponsible budget practices and reinvest in public education. Kelly will prioritize raising teacher pay, putting more dollars in the classroom, and working with parents and teachers to find the best solutions for our children. She will fight against voucher programs and other initiatives that take money out of public education and shortchange our students.
  • Criminal Justice Reform: Oklahoma imprisons more women than any other state and locks away more than twice the national average of non-violent offenders. This destroys families and costs Oklahoma taxpayers millions each year. Kelly believes we have to take a comprehensive look at reforming our criminal justice system so that we can begin to put more dollars into education and other areas that will move Oklahoma forward. Kelly wants to emphasize rehabilitating nonviolent offenders and increasing mental health services. She believes that we can work with law enforcement, the legal community, and everyone involved to create a healthier, more just system that doesn’t drain Oklahoma's budget.
  • Infrastructure: Oklahoma’s roads and bridges continue to crumble and lag behind surrounding states. Kelly knows that we need to increase funding for infrastructure repair and construction. She supports investing in alternative energy sources and updating our aging power grid which struggles to support Oklahoma’s growing population.[1]
