Melvin Thathiah
Melvin Thathiah (Republican Party) ran for election for judge of the Texas 380th District Court. He lost in the Republican primary on March 3, 2020.
Thathiah was previously a 2016 candidate for the Collin County Civil Court at Law in Texas.[1] He was defeated in the primary election on March 1, 2016.
Biography
Melvin Thathiah earned a B.A. in English language and literature from Texas A&M University in 2000 and a J.D. from the Florida Coastal School of Law in 2003. Thathiah's career experience includes working as an attorney with Hosto and Buchan, PLLC, Scott, Parnell & Associates, and as an owner of his own firm, The Law Office of Melvin Thathiah. He was appointed to serve as the associate judge for the Justice of the Peace Courts in Collin County.[2][3]

2016
Texas held general elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. A primary election took place on March 1, 2016. A primary runoff election was held on May 24, 2016, for any seat where the top vote recipient did not receive a majority of the primary vote.[4] David Waddill defeated James Angelino and Melvin Thathiah in the Colin County Civil Court at Law Republican primary for Number 7.[1]

Selection method
The members of the Texas Justice of the Peace Courts are elected in partisan elections and serve four-year terms. They are elected in a precinct-wide election.[5]
To serve as a justice of the peace, justices must complete a 40-hour course on relevant duties within one year of his or her election. They must also complete a similar 20-hour course each year they continue to serve.[6]
