Three seats on the Mesquite Independent School District board were up for general election on May 10, 2014. Place 3 and 5 incumbents Gary Bingham and Robert Seward, respectively, ran unopposed and were re-elected by default. In the Place 4 race, Greg Everett triumphed over fellow challenger Rachel Lopez.[1]

Mesquite Independent School District is located in Dallas County, Texas. The county seat of Dallas County is Dallas. The county's population was 2,368,139 according to the 2010 U.S. Census.[2]

Demographics

Dallas County underperforms the rest of Texas in terms of median household income and poverty rate but outperforms in terms of higher education attainment. The 2013 U.S. Census found that 28.6 percent of Dallas County residents over 25 years old held undergraduate degrees compared to a 26.7 percent rate for the state of Texas. Dallas County had a median income of $49,481 in 2013 compared to $51,900 for Texas. The poverty rate for Dallas County was 19.1 percent in 2013 compared to a 17.6 percent rate for the rest of the state.[2]

Voter and candidate information

The Mesquite Board of Trustees consists of seven members. While members are elected to specific places on the ballot, they serve at large. They serve three-year terms. There was no primary election and a general election took place on May 10, 2014 for three seats. Two seats will be on the ballot in May 2015.[4]

A member of the board must be 18 years old, a U.S. citizen and a resident of the district. An individual seeking office must be a resident of the state for 12 months and a resident of the district for six months, prior to the last date on which the candidate could file to be listed on the ballot.[5]
