Campaign themes

2016

Bloomberg's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

We Can Be a city with Safe Neighborhoods

  • We can be a safe and liveable city by:
  • Adequately staffing and compensating our police and fire departments to meet the needs of a city our size and crime level. We have some of the lowest entry-level pay rates in the state while having higher workloads, this combination has made finding new and qualified officers very difficult and puts the entire city at risk.

We Can Be a city with Great Jobs

  • We can be a city with great jobs, by:
  • Investing in local people and programs, not concrete buildings. GE didn’t make Pittsfield: Pittsfield made GE. By investing in people and programs, we can ensure long-term sustainable economic opportunity. Right now the state only spends 1% of its federal assistance on job training, the national average is 8%.

We Can Be a city with 21st Century Schools

  • We can be a city with 21st century schools, by:
  • Changing the funding formula to truly level the playing field for all students. A student’s street address should have no bearing on the quality of their education. I will promote statewide changes to the current funding model, first to recoup the over $5 million we are shorted in unfunded mandates by the state, and with a goal to move away from property taxes as a determinent for funding all together.

We Can Be a city with Effective Addiction Treatment

  • We can be a city with effective addiction treatment, by:
  • Treating addiction as a public and mental health issue and supporting our local healthcare professionals politically and as a community. They’ve trained for this and it’s their field of expertise, as politicians we need to let them do their job.

We Can Be a city with A Sustainable Environment

  • We can be a sustainable city by:
  • Creating walkable and bikeable neighborhoods. The average resident of a walkable neighborhood weighs 6-10 pounds less than someone who lives in a sprawling neighborhood. It’s healthier and it’s age-friendly.[1]
