Campaign themes

2016

Berry's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

  • Economy: Our state thrives when our free market system is able to flourish. Oklahomans have a longstanding reputation for innovation and entrepreneurial spirit. Our economy grows when we create an environment conducive to let the enterprising spirit succeed.
  • Education: To enhance our kid's core curriculum performance, we should first emphasize teaching our youth morals, work ethic and the significance of contributing/service. Only when these factors are practiced by our youth will they begin to demonstrate the overall educational progress we are seeking. We must also engage parents and families to be a vital part of their kid's education.
  • Second Amendment: The Second Amendment conveys a fundamental right we enjoy through our constitution. The right to bear arms serves an ideological as well as practical purpose to protect and defend ourselves. I support gun ownership by law abiding Oklahomans as an important and inherent right.
  • Budget: We can reduce the impact of budget shortfalls by reducing agency waste and enhancing efficiencies. To reduce the impact of economic downturns, we need to focus on continuing to diversify our economy through the recruitment and retention of varied industries. As a state, we have enhanced our aerospace and biotech industries and I believe we must continue to attract and recruit a diverse economic base.
  • Poverty: The dramatic increase in income inequality and poverty stricken people is of great concern and must be urgently addressed. The knee jerk solutions to poverty that have been attempted over the last several decades have unfortunately done nothing but exacerbate the problem. The government is not the solution. We will only make progress on this issue when we let the private sector through our churches and nonprofit organizations bring true-life change into people’s situations. When our churches and free market system flourishes so too will our lower and middle class. The vehicle of economic upward mobility is the inspiration for such great success stories that coined the term “American Dream”. The government's best efforts to alleviate this problem are actually hurting the very people it is attempting to help. The answer to solving poverty is not solely found by throwing money at the issue. Only when start taking thoughtful and strategic approaches to actually helping will we be able to aid in lifting people our of the hopelessness that is poverty.[1]
