Patricia J. Cottrell was a judge on the Tennessee Court of Appeals. She was appointed to the court by former Governor Don Sundquist in November 1998 and was retained by voters in 2000 and 2006.[1][2] In May 2013, Cottrell announced she would not be seeking retention in 2014. Her term was to end in August 2014; however, Cottrell retired early, in May 2014.[3][4]

Education

Cottrell received her undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee in 1969 and her J.D. degree from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1976.[1]

Career

Cottrell began her legal career in 1976 as an assistant attorney general. She became the director of the Public Law Institute of the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1978. From 1979 to 1981, she worked as the assistant director of the Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission. Cottrell then went on to serve as an assistant attorney general again from 1982 to 1984. She became a deputy attorney general in 1984 and a chief deputy attorney general in 1993. From 1997 until her appoint to the Tennessee Court of Appeals in 1998, she practiced law in Nashville, Tennessee.[1]
