Pedro Rael is a district court judge for the Thirteenth Judicial District in New Mexico. He was appointed to the court by Governor Susana Martinez on July 9, 2014, to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Violet C. Otero.[1] Rael won election in 2016.

Education

Rael received his undergraduate degree from the University of New Mexico and his J.D. from the University of Iowa College of Law.[1]

Career

Before his appointment to the Thirteenth Judicial District, Rael worked as an attorney in private practice for over forty years in Los Lunas, New Mexico.[1][2]

New Mexico held general elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. A primary election took place on June 7, 2016. The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was March 8, 2016.[3] Incumbent Pedro Rael ran unopposed in the New Mexico 13th District Court general election for Division 4.[4]

The 84 judges of the New Mexico District Courts are selected in partisan elections to six-year terms. They must compete in yes-no retention elections if they wish to serve subsequent terms.[5]

The process of chief judge selection varies by district, as does the chief judge's term length.[5]

Qualifications
To serve on this court, a judge must:[5]

  • be the minimum age of 35;
  • have at least six years legal practice;
  • be a state resident for at least three years; and
  • be a district resident.
