Sarah Bell
Sarah Bell was a Republican candidate in the June 21 special election for the Georgia House of Representatives, District 113. The special election was called to fill a vacancy created when Hank Huckaby (R) resigned to become the new University of Georgia Chancellor.[1]
Bell is adjunct professor at Gainesville State College. She also taught English at UGA and two private schools. She is the co-founder of We Care Animal Haven, which rescues pets and places them in new homes. She is also the owner of "Doctors of English," which provides technical editing and consulting. In addition, Bell works as a Red Cross volunteer and has served on the Board of Directors for 18 years.[2][3]
Campaign themes
Bell's campaign site emphasizes her campaign themes and policy positions:
Family Courts: "I will support legislation which strengthens the family... One particular initiative is the Family Court... It offers families in crisis a kinder, less expensive, more responsive place to solve the painful problems of divorce and custody issues. While every county could not afford such a Court, we might move in the direction of establishing regional Courts, based on the judicial circuits.
Life Issues: "I am strongly pro-life, believing that each human being is unique, special, and a creation of a loving God. Each one has unknown potential and gifts. The least we as a society can do is to support that precious life and assure that the "right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" are available."
Taxes: "The State should have to do what its citizens are doing: spend every penny with purpose and efficiency, while doing only the essential functions. State government must spend OUR tax dollars with the same attitude of its citizens: it must learn to do more with less and get back to the basics. It should do only what the citizens cannot do for themselves."
Education: "I believe that there are many skilled teachers and administrators doing outstanding work in our public schools. Regrettably, some teachers and administrators are ineffective. Our students suffer as a result. We need to improve the quality of teaching, learning, and goals in our public schools...We need a new focus on challenging teachers, parents, and students to be the best they can be. More money is obviously not the answer; a new way of thinking about education may be."
