Voters in Memphis, Tennessee, will take to the polls on Thursday, October 8, to select their next mayor and board of city councilors. Incumbent Mayor A. C. Wharton, who was elected in a special election in 2009, is up against nine opponents. However, he faced just as many challengers in 2011, when he still managed to win a hefty 65 percent of the vote.[1][2]

In total, 60 candidates filed to run for the 13 seats on the city council, though only seven of the 13 council members are running for re-election. Every race is contested, and races without an incumbent have as many or more candidates than those that have an incumbent running. The exception to this pattern is District 7, where incumbent Berlin Boyd will face eight challengers for his seat.[1]

Some of the main issues on the line for the 2015 elections are urban blight, population loss and crime. To read about where the candidates stand on these issues, click here. If a runoff election becomes necessary for any of these hotly contested races, the runoff will be held on November 19.[2]
