Vacancies in two Georgia state legislative districts may be filled after special elections on Tuesday. Six Democrats and one independent candidate are vying for the seat in District 55, which was vacated by Tyrone Brooks (D). On the day of his resignation, Brooks pleaded guilty to one count of filing a false tax document and no contest to five counts of mail and wire fraud.[1][2]

Brooks' son, Tyrone Brooks, Jr. (D), filed to fill his father's seat.[3] However, he was initially removed from the ballot after failing to prove he had lived in the district for at least one year.[4] Brooks, Jr. was temporarily placed back on the ballot by a Superior Court judge on June 11, 2015, and a hearing was held on June 15, just one day prior to the election, to determine Brooks' eligibility.[5]

Ultimately, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Kimberly M. Esmond Adams sided with Secretary of State Brian Kemp's (R) original decision and ruled that Brooks, Jr. is not eligible for the ballot. Signs informing voters of the last-minute ruling will be posted at all polling places. Votes cast for Brooks will not be counted.[6]

Meanwhile, a slate of four Republicans will compete for the seat in District 24 after it was vacated by Mark Hamilton (R) in May 2015. If necessary, runoff elections will be held in both districts on July 14.
