Clean politics Affordability A cleaner environment Smart government
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
Taking money out of politics and ensuring power is spread evenly among citizens based on votes. Reducing the cost of living and managing gentrification so anybody with an honest career can live comfortably. Keeping our environment clean so our generation and future generations can exist harmoniously with nature. Streamlining government so that it is faster, more responsive to citizens, and uses taxpayer money more efficiently.
Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?
Bernie Sanders was a no-nonsense candidate who fought to reduce the influence of wealthy interests and make life easier for the struggling working class.
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?
HBO's The Wire.
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Open. Honest. Transparent. Collaborative. Rational.
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
A good leader doesn't have all the solutions - they empower experts to develop and execute creative solutions. As a City Planner, there is nobody who better understands urban dynamics and what can be done to improve the quality of life for everyone.
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Represent the working class. Preserve our island's environment. Restore trust in government and elected officials. Make Hawaii more affordable and improve everyone's quality of life.
What legacy would you like to leave?
Paved the way for elected officials to actually represent the working class by taking the influence of money out of politics.
What qualities does this office possess that makes it a unique and important part of the local government?
We have the ability to determine development patterns on our island. We need to make sure development does not sprawl beyond the urban core, and that all new residential developments include truly affordable housing for the long-term.
