What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
Health care, expansion of Medicaid, Education, stop cutting and fund properly Public lands in Public hands
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
Health care access, mental health support and education. We are 49th in children's health care in the Nation, We are 3rd in the nation in suicide. We can do better but investing in our selves. We can't cut our way to the future.
Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?
I liked to follow many people but I'm certainly a fan of the Obama's. We need civil discourse and to talk to the other side. We should not be having a race to the bottom in WY. We need to look to the future and to serve the people who elect us.
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?
I read a lot, I loved the most recent book Being Mortal which explains that we need to find out what is important to people then act on their needs. The Ninth Hour is another book about strong women in confide situations helping people through the turmoil of life. The life of Bee's inspired me to see the best of people and to help those who need our support and never give up.
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Integrity, honesty, listening to constituents and serving their interests. Also, educating the public about civil responsibility.
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I can get along with almost anyone, no matter or different political positions. I'm been in service and volunteering to help people my entire life. I think the system can work to the benefit of the majority but we can't exclude the minority from having a voice. Nurses are quite good at getting families and groups working together for the common good. I've served on the State retirement board and know about finances.
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Do do what is right for the majority of the people you serve. You can't please everyone but you can communicate with respect and respectfully disagree. Honesty with all issues.
What legacy would you like to leave?
I'd like people to say the system can work if we just vote, support good people regardless of party and she worked for the common good.
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
I was a freshman in High school when JFK was killed and when MLK was killed I was in nursing school. Those events profoundly effected me. Senseless murders of great men who had a positive impact on the world. .
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
I worked from a very young age, I babysat, did mending and ironing for rich women, I worked waitress work, filing in offices, short order cook and later as a nurse aide during my nurses training. I've been a clinical nurse for 48 yrs and I also have an education degree and taught nurses aides and EMT's in an alternative high school for 11 yrs. I've always loved my jobs and have a strong work ethic.
What happened on your most awkward date?
I was with many who were drinking and I've never drank or used drugs so I wanted to be out of there.
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
I love Christmas and I love Holy Week and Easter, it is solemn and beautiful reminder that all can be redeemed.
What is your favorite book? Why?
I have so many favorite books it is hard to pick one. Eternal on the Water was about love that endured even a tragic disease. The Life of Bees was about the perseverance of strong smart women to conquer their world by helping others.
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
I love my kitchen because I love to bake and share meals with others. I'm also a party giver so I love to share my food and kitchen space.
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Dionne Warwick, Where am I going. I sang this for fun and learned it well.
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
Life is full of struggles. The death of my husband an being a widow at 55 yo. Losing the love of my life was a crushing blow to my life. Remembering the good marriage and my beautiful family has helped me through these 14 yrs
Every state besides Nebraska has two legislative chambers. What do you consider the most important differences between the legislative chambers in your state?
In WY there is no difference except for the fact that many the Senate is not so radical in their opposition to women's health. Radical but to a lesser degree.
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
It is helpful to have experience but it doesn't have to be direct legislative experience it would help but not the most important. You can have experience in governing boards, business, non profits and other experience, even being in a family gives you experience that can help you understand peoples needs.
What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?
Budget shortfalls and changing the tax structure to allow us to have some diversity. We depend on extraction industry for all our needs for revenue and we all know what coal is going these days. Health care access and education shortfalls.
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?
They should work together for the citizens of the state not their political party.
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
If you don't build relationships with your coworkers you can't be productive. It must be a team effort to work for the good of the state and the people in the state
What process do you favor for redistricting?
Independent non political process that respects boundaries and community cohesiveness. I don't want to my party to gerrymander anymore then I like what is happening all over the country.
If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
I want to work with anyone who supports ideas that move the state forward and help our young people stay in the state and move to advance our communities.
Is there a particular legislator, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?
I want to model myself after 1 woman and 2 male legislators. The woman speaks to issues important to families and respect for all. The men say what is important and don't deviate in their beliefs if they feel it will serve the community well. They buck their own party when it is the right thing to do. Honesty, intelligence and willingness to listen are what all 3 of these legislatures bring to the table
Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?
NO
Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
I have walked to more than 800 doors myself. I hear time and time again about health needs of children and family members with disabilities being neglected for lack of financial means. I have known these stories from 48 years of practice and business ownership. people are suffering and they are not afraid to share their stories at the door. They must be listened to, heard and helped when we can.
