Campaign themes

2016

Murray's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[1]

Education

  • Excerpt: "Many of our teachers are going into classrooms that exceed the cap set years ago under House Bill 1073 causing teachers to be overwhelmed with the burden of controlling their classroom AND teaching the children. Having smaller classroom settings will allow for a teacher to handle situations easier and for children to have a better learning environment."
  • Excerpt: "The Common Core program is making it more difficult for teachers to teach. Common Core attempted to raise standards as well as offering teachers some flexibility for students to understand the teachings but failed miserably. No Child Left Behind had good potential for hiring tutors to help students who were falling behind, but with no accountability and no funding, this program has also failed our children."

Public safety

  • Excerpt: "After working in law enforcement for nearly 37 years, I have a passion for the safety of Oklahomans. Law enforcement makes thousands of arrests each year. Criminals are tried and sentenced to jails and prisons. With a large incarceration rate, our prisons are becoming overcrowded, guards are working longer hours and keeping control of the prison population is becoming more difficult. Early release programs and our recidivism rate puts many that are not reformed back into our community to prey on more victims."
  • Excerpt: "There are programs in place which we can utilize and fund, so when the inmates are released, they don’t return to jail. Counseling and rehab personnel should be increased. Work release and in-house employment opportunities will give them skills to better prepare them for the outside world again. Businesses on the outside can be utilized to offset costs of their incarceration and in return, help our economy flourish. This problem has a solution and I intend to fix it."

Transportation infrastructure

  • Excerpt: "ODOT and DOT has been inspecting our bridges over the last few years. Their results say our bridges are far past their life expectancy. Federal funding has been given in all 50 states to fix the infrastructure, but it isn’t enough. It will take more local dollars to fix our roads, highways and bridges and most importantly fix them correctly. I want to find alternatives to the way our roads are repaired so this is not an ongoing problem for Oklahomans down the road."
