Basic facts | |
Organization: | Galactic Senate of the Republic |
Role: | Senator |
Location: | Alderaan |
Bail Organa was a senator who represented the Alderaan system in the Galactic Senate of the Republic. He was also a member of the system's royal family, styled as His Serene Highness, First Chairman and Viceroy of Alderaan.[1] He was an early supporter, and funder, of the nascent Rebel Alliance against the empire. With his wife, Breha, he adopted and raised a daughter, Leia, who was a twin biological child of Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala.[2]
Career
Bail Organa was a senator who represented the Alderaan system in the Galactic Senate of the Republic, succeeding Bail Antilles.[1] Organa was also a member of the Alderaanian royal family. He was an early ally of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine in the Senate; Palpatine named Organa to his Loyalist Committee.[3] Organa also had good working relationships with influential senators such as Mon Mothma of Chandrila, Padme Amidala of Naboo, and Onaconda Farr of Rodia. He was an outspoken voice on issues such as the Clone Wars refugee crisis and military funding via the Banking clan, which often put him in conflict with Kaminoan Senator Halle Burtoni. Burtoni represented Kamino, the planet where Republic cloning facilities were located and towards which large government spending was directed.[4]
On the banking clan issue, Padme Amidala, senator from Naboo, called Organa "the finest public speaker I know" and said that he would be the only senator who could convince his colleagues "that voting for this bill will bankrupt the Republic both financially and spiritually."[5]
The Clone Wars
Bail Organa was an early advocate of creating an army for the Galactic Republic. He also supported giving Chancellor Palpatine emergency powers.[1] After witnessing first-hand the killing of Jedi younglings by Clone troopers executing Palpatine's Order 66, Organa shifted his focus towards undermining the Chancellor's expansive grabs for power.[3] Organa remained in the Senate during the Republic's bureaucratic reformation into the First Galactic Empire. According to an official profile:[3]

While representing Alderaan in the Imperial Senate, he worked secretly with allies such as Mon Mothma and Ahsoka Tano to assist rebel cells scattered across the galaxy, working towards the day that a unified Rebellion could emerge. [6] |

Organa himself stated that his "wealth would fund the rebellion."[5] Organa had a personal hand in rescuing Jedi Master Yoda after his battle with Imperial leader Emperor Palpatine.
Later career
Near the end of the Clone Wars, Organa's close friend and colleague, Senator Padme Amidala, gave birth to twins, one boy and one girl. Amidala did not survive the delivery. In discussions with Jedi Masters Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi, Organa informed the Jedi of his and his wife's intention to adopt Amidala's child, citing the couple's long-held desire for a daughter. The child, Leia, was raised as an Alderaanian princess. Leia would follow her father as an Imperial senator. She became Senator without portfolio when her planet of Alderaan was destroyed in a test of the Death Star under orders of Grand Moff Tarkin. Bail Organa was killed in that test.[3]
