Two of the seven seats on the Allen Independent School District school board were up for by-district general election on May 7, 2016. Incumbent Amy Gnadt won re-election to the Place 4 seat after running unopposed. Incumbent Mike Myers did not file for re-election to the Place 5 seat where newcomer Kelley Rowley defeated fellow candidates David Noll and Ken Lento.[1][2]

Voter and candidate information

The Allen ISD Board of Trustees is composed of seven members who are elected by district to three-year terms in specifically numbered seats. Candidates file to run for a specific seat, but all voters in the school district are eligible to vote for every seat up for election. Places 4 and 5 were scheduled for general election on May 7, 2016. There was no primary election.[3]

Candidates running for the school board had to be a United States citizen, a resident of Texas for at least 12 months, and a resident of the district for at least six months. Candidates also had to be 18 years of age or older and registered to vote.[3]

Allen Independent School District is based in Allen, a city located in Collin County, Texas. According to the United States Census Bureau, Collin County was home to 914,127 residents between 2010 and 2015.[6] The district was the 59th-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 20,381 students.[7]

Demographics

Collin County outperformed Texas as a whole in terms of higher education achievement between 2010 and 2014. The United States Census Bureau found that 49.4 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 27.1 percent for Texas as a whole. The median household income in the county was $84,233 compared to $52,576 for the entire state of Texas during the 2010-2014 time span. The poverty rate in Collin County was 7.0 percent compared to 17.2 percent for the entire state.[6]
