Campaign website

Potter’s campaign website stated the following:

Advocate for Parental Rights in Education

Debby believes that parents know best when it comes to their child’s education. The State of Kansas has already established the fundamental right of parents to control the care and custody of their children, including but not limited to, control over education, discipline, religious and moral instruction, medical care and emotional well-being. Debby will advance policies that strengthen parental involvement and decision-making and increase transparency.

Empower Parents and Local Communities

Empower parents and local communities, keep education decisions at the Local School Board level

Article 6 of the Kansas Constitution states,

“The legislature shall provide for a state board of education which shall have GENERAL supervision of public schools..” and additionality , “Local public schools under the general supervision of the state board of education shall be MAINTAINED, DEVELOPED and OPERATED by locally elected boards.” Local School Boards have the power to shape how the local public schools are operated.

Parent’s and communities have a voice, and they must exercise that voice by voting for local school board members that represent the values of their community. In turn, our public schools will reflect the values of our communities.

Debby is passionate about clarifying the role and reach of parents, local boards and the State Board of Education. Debby will advance policies that limit the reach of the State Board of Education and enhance local control.

Protect School Choice in Public, Private and Home-Schools!

Debby pledges to protect a parent’s right to choose where their child attends school. We already have great School Choice options in Kansas!

As of June 2024, if a parent sees that another school reflects more closely their value system, or another school provides education needs that align with the needs of their child, they are able to move their child to that public school.

If a parent wants their child to attend a private school or home-school them, they have that option as well.

Increase local school board involvement in State Board of Education decisions

Debby believes that her vote on the State Board of Education should reflect the voice of parents, teachers, and local school board members (her constituents) in District 10 communities.

As the State Board of Education brings items forward for discussion and votes, Debby believes that it is critical to have time to inform her District 10 constituents and gather feedback prior to placing her vote for that item.

A key initiative that Debby will work towards is coined, “Slowing Down the Vote“, requiring at least 60 days between an SBOE vote and the availability of details on that agenda item.[2]
