Elections
Method of board selection
The Elko County school board is composed of seven members each elected to a four-year term. Each member represents a specific geographic area or district which are numbered. The elections are staggered with three seats up for election in one year and four up for election two years later. Trustees must be qualified to vote and residents of the districts that they represent.[2] Board members are term limited to 12 years per Article 15, Section 3 of the Nevada Constitution.
According to state laws, if only two candidates file to run for a nonpartisan office, the office will only appear on the general election ballot. In addition, if only one candidate files to run for a nonpartisan office, the office will appear on the primary election ballot. If said candidate receives one or more votes in the primary election, they will be considered elected to the office and will not appear on the general election ballot.[3]
Candidates were required to file to run in the election with the county clerk's office by March 18, 2016, and to pay a filing fee of $30.[4]
