Everett Maroon completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Maroon's responses.
What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
Healthcare reform Opioid crisis response Community college tuition support
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
I work in public health and am experienced in policy strategy and policy making. I want to see us take action at the state level to cover everyone in the state and cover more procedures and bargain for better medication pricing.
Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?
I can think of many people I've known who have been civil servants at the federal and state level whose work has gone unnoticed but who have appreciably improved the wellness and lives of people. I'm here for the hardworking, quiet thinkers who, with integrity and accountability, do the day-by-day work to get better, more efficient programs to the public. Donna, Richard, Mary, you'd never know these folks but they've made lasting changes to governments and that has helped many of us.
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Transparency, accountability, the ability to listen, accessibility to one's constituents. We need to make this a true representative system again.
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I have twenty years of policy experience, program analysis, and work on the ground in health care, opioid crisis response, and working to decrease stigma against vulnerable populations. I'm smart, tenacious, and I know how lawmaking works.
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
See above.
What legacy would you like to leave?
That I left the world a better, kinder place than I found it.
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
Nixon's resignation. I did a pretty good imitation of him.
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
Tony's Farm Market, the summer I turned 17. I ran a cash register and priced and stocked merchandise. It was pretty basic, but fun.
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
It depends on the candidate/legislator, and the context within which they are legislating.
What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?
We have too many uninsured residents, too many people left out of care, too little done to help opioid-dependent people, too little investment in the rural areas of our state, and too much of our revenue is dependent on sales tax.
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?
Rigorous debate leading to pragmatic solutions.
