Geoff Simpson
Geoff Simpson was a Democratic member of the State of Washington House of Representatives, the lower house in the Washington State Legislature. He represented District 47-Position 1 from 2001 to 2010. He previously served on the Covington City Council. He also served as Mayor Pro Tempore for the City of Covington.
Biography
Simpson served in the United States Navy as Petty Officer Second Class from 1981 to 1985. He has also worked as a firefighter for the Kent Fire Department and as a small business owner.
Simpson attended Highline Community College, Edmonds Community College, and Bellevue Community College.[1]
Legislative activity and spending profile
Simpson was a co-sponsor of Washington House Bill 2601, a bill introduced in January 2008 that would have imposed aggressive new regulations on petition circulators.
Simpson has proposed 67 new bills in the 2008 legislative session, more than any other state assemblyman.[2] One bill that Simpson has proposed, HB 2420, proposes a new carbon tax (to fund the "Climate Action Fund Authority"[3]) in Washington that the state's fiscal impact office has determined would cost just shy of $27 billion over a ten year period.[4]
In the Evergreen Freedom Foundation's aggregation of spending proposed in 2008 legislative bills, Simpson came in second to Maralyn Chase for most spending proposed. Legislation Simpson is sponsoring would add $35.3 billion in new spending over 10 years.[5]
Fine, controversy
In 2002, the Washington Public Disclosure Commission fined Simpson $2,500.00 for violating the state law that forbids the use of public facilities and property for campaign activity.[6]
In 2007, it was disclosed on the Washington blog "Sound Politics" that Simpson had contributed anonymous comments claiming that Referendum 55 did not use paid petition circulators. Some of the comments later determined to have been contributed by Simpson were "your ignorance is stunning" and "I love it when you demonstrate your stupidity."Simpson's authorship of these comments became known through a public records request.[7]
