Ian F. Murphy was a 2016 Republican candidate for the Twelfth Plymouth District of the Massachusetts House of Representatives.

Murphy's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Welfare Reform
- As your district representative I hope to enact responsible and fiscally minded welfare reform. By converting the social services into a 5-7 year academic or vocational training program, we can enable those currently entrapped in a system that incarcerates their potential and hijacking their constitutionally protected vote. By training and empowering those in need, we can convert potential lifetime recipients into productive and tax producing members of our economy. As a social program, this would provide a high standard of living for those in Massachusetts, however as an economic program, it will provide higher tax revenue, lower expenses, and a higher trained or educated workforce making Massachusetts a more desirable location for future businesses.
Education
- In the past ten years, the public universities in Massachusetts have nearly doubled their tuitions. Our education policies and legislators have forgotten their constituents and students. Although many have claimed to be for the student and the betterment of the higher education system, we have seen only pandering to colleges wishing to change their status to university, and those abstaining their vote to protect student interest rates. As representative, I hope to enact a long term solution to this, by reducing public welfare spending through my proposal, I hope to open our fine institutions to those who deserve an education and show tremendous potential to better this state. If we do not limit the interest rates for student loans, provide reasonable access to excellent education, and develop the future of our state, we will see further economic downturns and the loss of industry this state thrives on.
Drug and Community Issues
- With rampant drug abuse, we need legislators that will take a hard line against the possession of large quantities and distribution, while providing incentives for voluntary forfeiture and treatment for users. By saving precious state funds on over prosecution of addicts, and diverting funds to proper prevention and intervention we can protect those who protect us and save a portion of budget. With proper prosecution of those truly contributing to the corruption of our children and communities, we can begin the process of rebuilding the community and establishing consequences that will deter such insidious behavior.
Monponsett Watershed
- Although this issue has not made state or national news, the precedent being set on ecologic and intrastate resource agreements is staggering. Too long have the lakes and reservoirs of small communities been exploited, with little to no repercussions, by larger cities. It is time that the state legislature steps in and enforces these agreements to their fullest extent. It will be a key priority for me,as representative to hold these cities accountable and preserve the environment they have happily utilized and allowed to deteriorate into toxic crime scenes, that once welcomed children and families on warm summer days.[1]
