One of the seven seats on the Iowa City Community School District Board of Education was up for special election for a three-year term on July 19, 2016. Candidate Paul Roesler defeated J.P. Claussen and Janice Weiner for the vacant seat left by the resignation of Tom Yates.[1]

Voter and candidate information

The Iowa City School Board consists of seven members elected at large to four-year terms. Seats are up for election on a staggered basis every odd-numbered year in September. The special election for one of the at-large seats took place July 19, 2016, to fill a vacant term for three years.[2] There was no primary election. Five seats, including one seat with a two-year term, were up for election in September 2015, and three seats were up for general election in September 2017.[3]

Candidates interested in running for the vacant seat had to file with the Johnson County auditor's office by June 24, 2016. Candidates had to collect 50 signatures to qualify for the election. The registration deadline for citizens wanting to vote in the election was July 8, 2016.[2]

The Iowa City Community School District is located in eastern Iowa in Johnson County. The county seat is Iowa City. According to the United States Census Bureau, Johnson County was home to 144,251 residents in 2015.[5] The district was the fifth-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 13,465 students.[6]

Johnson County outperformed Iowa as a whole in terms of higher education achievement from 2010 to 2014. The United States Census Bureau found 51.7 percent of the county residents aged 25 years and older attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 26.4 percent of state residents.
