Campaign themes

Falbo's campaign website lists three main issues:

  • Healthcare: "We must keep our momentum on children’s health care. A year ago more than 12 percent of our kids were without health care. Now we are on track to affordable health care for every child in Oregon.I will work hard to keep the ball rolling for accessible health care. I will fight to increase elder care facilities. In our rural area, people afflicted with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease often live far away from family members, making it very difficult to receive the supporting presence of loved ones. Worse, they must wait on a long list to get into a care facility. Nurses are critically few. I will strongly support the effort of Eastern Oregon University to ramp up its nursing program by over 60 percent. Studies show that nurses who prepare in rural locations tend to stay in them after graduation."
  • Education: "Education and economic development go hand in hand. We need to provide an education that fits traditional employment. We need, also, to ensure that our kids have access to a solid education to thrive in an advanced technological society. From the national level on down, the bar is being raised for educational achievement. I believe that our public schools should provide a healthy mix of solid academics, cultural learning, nutritious food and physical fitness activities, five days a week. I will keep faith with our nation and our kids by working to provide adequate school funding."
  • Jobs: "We can begin to crack Oregon’s high unemployment by the power of the purseand by examining current practices. For example the current law bases the purchase of the State’s goods and services on “The least cost.” Cost is important, but we could add language to the law that would award venders bidding points for employing local people... One impediment to business health is the difficulty of obtaining small business loans. Many are denied despite having a long record of responsible borrowing and repayment of loans. Using the Power of the Purse that is our tax money, Oregon could help small businesses get loans. North Dakota has had a State Bank for 90 years. It pays the State a competitive fee for its franchise. It is a public-private partnership in which the Bank guarantees private banks' sound business loans, thus spreading the risk while not competing with them for clients."
