Four seats on the Joliet Public Schools District 86 Board of School Inspectors were up for general election on April 7, 2015. The four seats included two East Side seats, one West Side seat and one at-large seat.[1]

Incumbents Deborah K. Ziech, Lorraine E. Guerrero, Tonya M. Roberts and Christine Kim were up for re-election.[2] Roberts and Kim faced one challenger, Sammie Valadez, for the two East Side seats. Guerrero did not file to run for re-election, leaving two challengers, Quinn Adamowski and Frank Cabreda, to run for the West Side seat. Only Ziech filed to run for the at-large seat, leaving her to run unopposed.[1]

Ziech won re-election to her at-large seat without opposition. Incumbents Roberts and Kim also retained their East Side seats. Adamowski won election to the West Side seat.[3]

Joliet Public Schools District 86 is located in Will County in northeastern Illinois. The county seat of Will County is Joliet. Will County was home to 682,829 residents in 2013, according to the United States Census Bureau.[4] During the 2011-2012 school year, Joliet Public Schools District 86 was the 23rd-largest school district by enrollment in Illinois and served 11,308 students.[5]

Will County outperformed the rest of Illinois in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 32.3 percent of Will County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 31.4 percent for Illinois as a whole. The median household income for Will County was $76,147, while it was $56,797 for the entire state. The poverty rate in Will County was 8.0 percent compared to 14.1 percent statewide.[4]

Voter and candidate information

The Joliet Public Schools District 86 Board of School Inspectors consists of seven members elected by district to four-year terms on a staggered basis every odd-numbered year. Three members are elected from the East Side district, three members are elected from the West Side district, and one member is elected at-large. A general election was held on April 7, 2014. One full-term seat from the East Side and two seats from the West side were up for election in 2013. In 2015, two East Side seats, one West Side seat and one at-large seat were up for election.[7]

To get on the ballot, school board candidates had to file a notarized statement of candidacy and notarized nominating petitions with the Will County Clerk's Office during the filing period. The filing period began December 15, 2014, and ended December 22, 2014. The nominating petitions had to include the signatures of 50 voters residing in the school district and could not be circulated until September 23, 2014.[8]

To vote in this election, voters had to register with the Will County Clerk's Office by March 10, 2015. Early voting was available for registered voters starting March 23, 2015, and ending April 4, 2015.[8]
