Moses Dixon was a 2016 Democratic candidate for the Seventeenth Worcester District of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. He ran unsuccessfully for the same seat in 2014.

Campaign themes

2016

Dixon's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Equal Access to Education & Advancement

  • As your State Rep, I will work with energy and creativity to provide the resources and partnerships that education needs to succeed:
  • Working with Worcester and Leicester public schools to improve “Pathways to Opportunity,” guiding students toward local community colleges and public universities for an affordable option
  • Advocating to freeze or reduce tuition rates at state schools
  • Working with federal and state lawmakers to alleviate student debt
  • Increasing aid for students to attend state colleges and universities
  • Assembling funds from both public- and private-sector sources to build pathways for state-of-the-art technical & vocational trainings in both Leicester and Worcester

Public Safety

  • As your State Rep, I will work as a liaison among our various communities, helping direct resources and attention where they can help improve our safety and security. Among these priorities:
  • Improving relationships between communities and police through open communication and regular public meetings.
  • Supporting law enforcement officials in crime prevention activities & collaborating on new solutions
  • Fighting the scourge of substance abuse and associated crimes
  • Facilitating communication among police, Community Development Corporations (CDC’s), and non-profit and faith-based organizations—increasing opportunity for success and reducing hopelessness
  • Creating job opportunities for young adults through targeted and broad-based economic development
  • Working with community neighborhood and crime watch associations

Let’s Get to Work: New Vitality for Our Regional Economy

  • Prosperity comes easier when everyone’s views and priorities are considered, when we talk about issues from all perspectives—and then take bold, creative action to get the best result. That means “putting people in the same room” who otherwise might never cross paths—and not just for its own sake, but because that’s how to get things done.
  • As your State Rep, I will do just that—listen to your concerns and priorities, and work with all the stakeholders to achieve the best outcome for people, communities, and businesses. This way of getting things done is reflected in our innovative policy proposals:

Valuing Our Veterans—Services, Housing, and Veteran-Owned Businesses

  • As your State Rep, I will represent the best interests of veterans, using every available tool toward this goal. Some priorities:
  • Increased emphasis on providing access to behavioral health services, so important in returning to civilian life
  • Development of “clearinghouse” for veteran-owned businesses, providing professional training and connecting them with new contracts and opportunities
  • Creation of new, affordable housing for veterans and their families
  • Public/private funding for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans’ scholarships, enabling them to return to state colleges and universities
  • Creation of state-funded, no-interest loan program to help disabled veterans start businesses and create jobs
  • Building stronger relationships and better communication among veterans and veterans’ families, advocacy organizations, and service providers
  • Streamlining benefits, cutting red tape—what’s available for veterans and how to expedite the process

Universal Broadband

  • As your State Rep, I will explore every avenue for providing “future-proof” Broadband to every home and business in the district.[1]
