Judge F. Keith Brown, retired from the Illinois Sixteenth Judicial Circuit Court on July 5, 2014. He had served as a judge since his election to the court in 1996. Brown previously served as an associate judge for the court from 1991 to 1996, becoming the first African-American judge to sit on a court in Kane County, Illinois. During his judicial career, Brown presided over criminal, civil, and family court cases. While serving as the chief judge, he established a new court in the City of St. Charles, improved the probation department's supervision of defendants, and updated the technology used by the court system in Kane County. As for his judicial philosophy, Brown has stated: "I’ve lived by the golden rule — to treat everybody like you’d like to be treated. I’ve tried to treat everyone with respect and I tried to listen to both sides. I tried to keep a tone in my court where everyone was comfortable and could conduct their business." While Brown may have retired from judicial service, he will continue to work in the legal field as a mediator with ADR Systems, an alternative dispute resolution firm in Chicago. He will also serve as of counsel to the law firm of Meyers & Flowers, LLC in St. Charles.
