Two of the seven seats on the Rogers School District school board were up for general election on September 20, 2016. In the race for at-large Position 6, candidate Mitch Lockhart defeated fellow candidates Caley Vo and Bob White. Nathan Gairhan won the by-district Position 7 seat. Candidate Mark Sparks filed in the race but withdrew in late August 2016, leaving Gairhan to run unopposed. Because of his late withdrawal, Sparks' name still appeared on the ballot.[1][2]

Voter and candidate information
The Rogers school board consists of seven members elected to five-year terms. Five of the board members represent a specific geographic area or zone, and the other two members are elected at large. Two seats were up for general election on September 20, 2016. There was no primary election.[3]
Individuals interested in running for the school board had to be at least 18 years of age and registered to vote. Candidates were required to gather petition signatures from at least 20 voters registered in the school district. This petition of candidacy had to be submitted to the Arkansas Secretary of State by June 12, 2016. School board candidates also had to reside in the school district and could not have a record of felony conviction.[4]

The Rogers School District is located in northwest Arkansas in Benton County. The county seat is Bentonville. According to the United States Census Bureau, Rogers was home to 63,159 residents between 2010 and 2015.[8] The district was the fourth-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 15,094 students.[9]
Demographics
Rogers outperformed Arkansas as a whole in terms of median household income and poverty rates. The median household income in Rogers was $52,386, compared to $41,264 statewide. The Census Bureau reported that 27.3 percent of city residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree or higher, compared to 27.1 percent for all of Arkansas. The city poverty rate was 14.0 percent, compared to a statewide poverty rate of 18.9 percent.[8]
