July 12, 2018: Among incumbent politicians seeking re-election this year, 73% face no primary competition. That figure actually reflects a slight increase in competitiveness compared to recent years. In 2016, 77% faced no primary competition. In 2014, that figure was 78%.
Data compiled by Ballotpedia notes that federal officials are more likely to face primary competition. Only 45% of those in the U.S. House have completely avoided a primary challenge. The same is true for 48% of U.S. senators seeking re-election.
Among state-level executive officers, 61% face no primary competition. Among those in state legislatures, 76% have no primary challengers.
The above figures reflect only states for which the filing deadline has already passed in 2018. For more information, see Ballotpedia's report on 2018 primary election competitiveness in state and federal government.
An earlier Number of the Day noted that only 10% of U.S. House races are expected to be competitive in the general election.
