In 2009, there were three races for three state supreme courts, in Louisiana, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Louisiana

A vacancy on the Louisiana Supreme Court was created with the 2009 retirement of Justice Chet Traylor. 4th District Judge Marcus Clark defeated Jimmy Faircloth, a former executive counsel to Governor Bobby Jindal, on October 17, 2009. [1][2]

Pennsylvania

An election was held in November 2009 to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Chief Justice Ralph Cappy. Joan Orie Melvin was elected to the court.[3]
