Three of the seven seats on the Tomball Independent School District school board were up for by-district general election on November 8, 2016. Matt Schiel defeated fellow newcomers Lee McLeod and Joseph Ferguson for the open District 5 seat. District 6 and District 7 incumbents Samuel Gregson and Lisa Nichols won re-election without opposition to their respective seats.[1]

Voter and candidate information

The Tomball Independent School District Board of Trustees consists of seven at-large members elected to four-year terms. The filing period for Texas school board candidates running in fall elections started on July 23, 2016. The final day for candidates to file their applications for ballot placement was August 22, 2016. A candidate for school board in Texas must be a citizen of the United States and a resident of the school district. The application for ballot placement also states that candidates cannot have felony convictions or court judgments verifying total mental incapacity on their records.[2]

The deadline to register to vote for the November election was October 11, 2016. The early voting period started on October 24, 2016, and concluded on November 4, 2016.[3]

Tomball Independent School District is located in both Harris County, Texas and Montgomery County, Texas. The seats for these counties are Houston and Conroe, respectively. Combined, the areas of Harris and Montgomery Counties were home to 5,075,587 residents in 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau.[6] The district was the 90th-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 12,499 students.[7]
