Mona Singh has proudly called Wake County home since 1995. She and her husband, a Professor at NC State, have raised their two children here—both graduates of Wake County Public Schools. A nationally recognized technology expert, Mona holds more than 130 U.S. patents, has played a key role in major industry innovations that improve everyday lives, and has served as an expert witness in high-profile technology cases.

Beyond her career, Mona is deeply committed to service. She has led hunger relief efforts, refugee support programs, and community volunteer initiatives. She serves on the Board of Directors for Activate Good and the Town of Cary’s Information Services Advisory Board. A lifelong Democrat, Mona has served as a precinct leader, campaign organizer, canvasser, and canvassing trainer. She has trained hundreds of volunteers and collaborated with key Wake groups to flip key NC Senate seats.

I’m running to apply my professional expertise and my grassroots experience to elevate Wake County. My skills will complement the rest of our great Commission to address major challenges, e.g., affordability, education, and transit. People-focused systems thinking will break down silos and find efficiencies across County services. I will enhance community, build human and social capital, and improve mental health, making Wake a place to flourish.
  • Funding Public Education, Special Education, and Infrastructure. I will ensure that public schools get the funding to provide quality education. I will work to find ways to provide the necessary funds for all aspects of our schools, including buildings and equipment, support (salaries, benefits, etc.) for WCPSS teachers and other staff. I will work to measurably advance community participation in education by promoting programs such as Communities in Schools for mentoring students so that students whose families may lack college-educated adults can benefit from the experience and expertise of retirees, and to enhance STEAM offerings across our schools.
  • Housing Affordability. We can improve the quality of life by promoting higher density residences with convenient access to shared spaces such as parks. Higher density development along with pedestrian-friendly layouts would make walking more pleasant and help build community by enhancing casual interactions between neighbors, with payoffs in social capital and mental health. It would also make public transportation more viable and thus lead to a reduction of the need for single occupancy vehicles.
  • Public Transportation and Microtransit. I will ensure any affordable housing is well-connected to employment centers through public transit; we currently have affordable housing with inadequate connectivity, which unjustifiably constrains the opportunities for low-income residents. Longer-term, I will support efforts to create a light rail system in the Triangle and vicinity.
Real-life problems are interrelated but County services are siloed. For example, job loss leads to housing loss, healthcare loss, and food insecurity, which affect mental health and increase the incidence of domestic violence.

First, I will improve the County’s interface with the community. For example, a social worker assigned to each community would provide guidance to families about County services, e.g., for health, mental health, domestic violence, housing, schooling for children, and upskilling opportunities for adults.

Second, I will institute continual data gathering and analytics to determine how service needs are changing, how demand is trending, and to allocate health, mental health, and housing proactively.
