One of the five seats on the Escambia County School District school board was up for by-district primary election on August 30, 2016. Kevin Adams defeated fellow newcomer Willie Kirkland Jr. for the open District 1 seat. The District 4 and District 5 seats were originally set to be on the ballot, but when District 4 incumbent Patty Hightower and District 5 incumbent William Slayton Jr. were unopposed in their bids for re-election at the passing of the filing deadline, they were automatically re-elected.[1]
Florida school board elections function differently than elections of this kind in most states. Primary elections for Florida school boards were held on August 30, 2016, though primaries are functionally general elections. A general election on November 8, 2016, became unnecessary after Adams won the District 1 seat with a majority of the primary vote. Unopposed elections were canceled and did not appear on the ballot. Special elections were held in conjunction with some general elections to fill vacancies.
