R. Steven Whalen was a federal magistrate judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. Whalen served on the court from 2002 to 2021. Whalen served as executive magistrate judge from November 2003 until his retirement.[1][2]

Biography

Early life and education

Judge Whalen was born in Chicago, Illinois. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois and his J.D. degree from the Wayne State University Law School.[1]

Career

Judge Whalen began his career working for the Senior Citizens Legal Aid Project in Detroit. He then worked as an Assistant Defender at the State Appellate Defender Office before becoming a private practice lawyer specializing in criminal defense. He became a magistrate in 2002. He has also lectured on criminal law and he published a comprehensive manual and form book about Michigan criminal appeals.[1]
